The Solicitors Qualifying Examination or SQE is the new assessment for those wishing to qualify as a solicitor. The SQE will gradually replace the longstanding Legal Practice Course as the route to becoming a solicitor in England and Wales.

The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is the latest pathway to becoming a qualified solicitor, introduced in September 2021. This is a vital step for anyone looking to pursue a career in law.

The SQE comprises two key components:

SQE1: Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK)

This is composed of two assessments, containing 180 MCQs each (360 MCQs in total). The exam is split into two separate days, FLK1 and FLK2, with each part comprising of 180 questions.

SQE2: Practical Legal Skills

This component features 16 written and oral assessments that evaluate six practical legal skills over 14 hours in total. In addition, all candidates must complete two years of Qualifying Work Experience to become fully qualified.

Assessment dates for SQE1:

SQE1 assessments will take place each year in January and July.

The cost of taking the SQE assessment:

SQE1: £1,622

SQE2: £2,493
